Bay Street stretches from the entrance to the UCSC campus (its northernmost point) all the way to the coast, just in front of the Santa Cruz Coast Hotel (its southernmost point).

Driving Conditions
Generally, in the section of Bay street between High street and Mission street, traffic can get pretty congested, especially during rush hours, from university traffic. Watch out for speed traps. On the rest of the street, however, the traffic is light for the most part.
Cycling Conditions
Though most of the street is generally pretty safe for cyclists, the portion between High Street and Mission Street is much less hospitable. Going towards campus, the road is inclined and makes for a lot of huffing and puffing if you're not in top physical condition. The "bike lane" is extremely narrow at best, and nonexistant at worst. At night there is almost no lamplight on the steepest stretches, and with only a bike light or car headlights to guide you, make sure you're wearing a helmet.
Businesses, Restaurants and Attractions
There are very few businesses and restaurants on Bay street- instead, it is lined with homes and natural park areas. The riparian walkway, located on the stretch between Anthony and Meder intersections, is a hidden park located in the center divider of the road. Be aware that sometimes homeless people stay here during the night.
