The land that is now known as Bonny Doon Ecological Reserve was private property for years, until the Nature Conservancy bought it and donated the property to the state in 1989. It is now managed by the California Department of Fish and Game. The reserve has always been popular with locals due to its unique rock formations, known as Moon Rocks, which are 500 feet at their tallest.
The Moon Rocks area is still closed to the public, to protect its natural features, but their are trails at the Reserve which are open for hiking. Parking is available in the lot next to the Bonny Doon Fire Station on Martin Road.
