The primary service offered by Santa Cruz METRO is fixed-route bus service within Santa Cruz County. They also provide paratransit service (called Metro Paracruz), and Highway 17 Express service to San Jose.
Fares for riding the bus are:
-
$1.50 per ride / $4.50 day pass for individuals over 46" tall. SCMTD does not allow for transfers on one-way trips (see the link above for more information on transfers). Three children (under 46") may ride for free with a paying adult.
-
$.75 per ride / $2.25 day pass for disabled people and senior citizens with proper identification (such as a discount card)
-
$3.00 one way for Metro ParaCruz
-
Discount cards are available for disabled people and senior citizens (over age 62).
-
Monthly/yearly passes are also available for purchase.
-
These fares exclude the Highway 17 Express bus service, which is jointly run by SCMTD, VTA of Santa Clara County, Amtrak, California Department of Transportation (CalTrans), and the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA). See bottom of the page for more information.
SCMTD has several transit stations throughout the county:
-
Santa Cruz Metro Center (Pacific Station)
-
Cavallaro Transit Center (Scotts Valley)
-
The Capitola Mall serves as the primary bus center for the city of Capitola
The "census designated areas" and unincorporated areas of Santa Cruz often have routes running through them, but do not have their own transit stations.
Westside and Midtown Santa Cruz City (Non-University)
Route 3: Mission/Natural Bridges
-
Serves the lower west side: (In route order) Municipal Wharf, Bay Street, Mission Street, Grandview St, Swift St, Delaware Ave, DeAnza Mobile Home Park, Swanton Blvd, Chico Ave., Modesto ave., Swift St., Delaware Ave, Fair Ave., Mission Street, Bay Street, Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz Metro Center
-
Nearby Destinations: Natural Bridges State Park, Seymour Marine Discovery Center, Long Marine Lab, Homeless Garden Project, Almar Shopping Center, Bay View Elementary, Pacific Collegiate School, Municipal Wharf
-

-
Other Notes:
Route 4: Harvey West/Emeline
-
Serves Upper Midtown: Front Street, River Street, Water Street, Grant St., Emeline / Emeline Complex, Hwy 9 / Paradise Park (Select trips only), Encinal, Harvey West, Coral, River, Front
-
Nearby Destinations: Gateway Plaza shopping center, Harvey West Industrial Area, Harvey West Park, Costco, Goodwill Industries / the Bargain Barn, Paradise Park, River Street Homeless Shelter, Veterans' Hall, Emeline Complex, County Government Center, Grant Park
-
Frequency: Leaves the SC Metro station hourly, starting at 6:45 am and the last bus leaving the Metro at 4:45 pm
-
Other Notes: Be sure to check to make sure that the bus has a planned stop at your destination. The timetable is erratic and doesn't always stop at every bus stop along the way. It also varies depending on whether you are travelling in the morning or afternoon— just be sure to read the schedule carefully.
Route 7: Beach/Lighthouse
-
Serves Pacific Avenue, Bay Street, Columbia st., Delaware Ave., Woodrow Ave., Pelton Ave., Lighthouse Ave., Bay Street, Beach St., 3rd Ave., Riverside Ave., 2nd Ave., Pacific Avenue

-
Frequency: This route only runs twice during the day, once before school is in session (leaving the SC Metro station at 7:35 am) and once after school ends (Leaves metro at 2:30 pm)
-
Other Notes: Again, this is primarily to serve elementary and middle school students, as well as the surrounding neighborhood. Therefore, if you miss the bus, you can't expect another one to come anytime soon.
UCSC Routes
If possible, you should use the shuttles operated by TAPS instead of the Santa Cruz METRO. Every time a student steps on a METRO bus, the University is charged a dollar or so, whether they're riding 15 feet on campus, or commuting all over town. The exception is Highway 17, which the Metro charges the students ($4) directly.
UCSC students will be interested in the routes that pass through campus:
-
Route 10 - University via High Street
-
Route 12 - University/East Side Direct
-
Route 13 - University via Walnut
-
Route 15 - University via Laurel West
-
Route 16 - University via Laurel East
-
Route 19 - University via Lower Bay
-
Route 20 - University via Westside
All of these routes enter campus through one entrance and exit at the other, making a long loop around campus. Odd-numbered routes go clockwise (entering at the west entrance), and even-numbered routes go counter-clockwise (entering through the main entrance.) All routes except 12 originate at the Santa Cruz Metro Center.
Avoid the 20 if you can. People who live on Western Drive and Westside of Santa Cruz only have the option of riding the 20 to get home.

Comments:
2009-05-28 08:08:48 There is a big mistake in this Wiki. Highway 17 bus is in fact run by SCMTD but not solely. It is jointly run by SCMTD, VTA (of Santa Clara County) and Amtrak. To state that it is not run by SCMTD is patently wrong. —71.146.3.97
